For my IRCC spousal sponsorship application, what is a common-law partner?
Your common-law partner:
- Is not legally married to you,
- Is of the opposite sex or the same sex as you,
- Is 18 years old or older, and
- Has been living with you for at least 12 consecutive months. That means you have been living together continuously for one year, without any long periods apart. One of you may have left the home for work or business travel, family obligations, and so on. That separation must have been temporary and short.
When at least one partner chooses to end the relationship, IRCC considers the partnership to be over.
You will need to give proof of your common-law relationship.
