High quality of life

Welcoming communities

The Government of Canada invests millions of dollars every year to help newcomers settle into their new lives in Canada.

There are many immigrant services to help you and your family if you move here permanently. You can use free programs to improve your language skills, learn about life in Canada, help you look for work and much more.

World class education

When you settle in Canada, you and your family will have access to one of the highest quality education systems in the world. The OECD ranks Canada as one of the top performers in reading literacy, math and science.

Clean environment

Canada has a significant share of the earth's natural ecosystems—25 per cent of wetland ecosystems, 15 per cent of forests and 16 per cent of Arctic ecosystems. Canada's air quality has also been ranked among the top three in the world by the World Health Organization.

Environmental stewardship is important to Canadians. In addition to countless provincial and municipal lands, Canada's vast national parks system includes world-renowned sites like Banff and Jasper. Canada's natural environment has shaped not only the geography of our country, but also the course of its history and the experiences of the people who live and travel here. Come explore Canada for yourself!

Safety and security

Canadians enjoy safe and secure communities. We have a national police force and many other law enforcement agencies across the country. Our crime rates are so low that the OECD Better Life Index 2014 ranked Canada 9.7 out of 10 for safety. During everyday life in Canada, you can feel safe and secure in your home and community.

Freedom and Canadian values

The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees and protects basic rights and freedoms. The OECD lists Canada as the number one world leader when it comes to acceptance and tolerance of minorities. As a society, we are open to and respectful of different cultures and ideas. Everyone, no matter their religious belief, cultural background or sexual orientation has the right to participate in the Canadian society and economy without fear or oppression.

In Canada, men and women are equal under the law. Canada's openness and generosity does not extend to early and forced or polygamous marriage or harmful cultural practices that tolerate spousal abuse, such as so-called "honour killings," or other gender-based violence. These practices are incompatible with Canadian values and are unacceptable in Canada.
