Canada and the Arctic

Canadian leadership on international Arctic issues is undertaken by Global Affairs Canada under the direction of Canada’s Senior Arctic Official.

Global Affairs Canada, with the support of other government departments with Arctic and North mandates, work together to set out a vision for Canada’s actions in the Arctic.

On December 20, 2016, President Obama and Prime Minister Trudeau announced a new partnership to embrace opportunities and confront challenges in the changing Arctic, with Indigenous and Northern partnerships, and responsible, science-based leadership.

On October 8, 2016, Parliamentary Secretary Goldsmith-Jones, delivered remarks at a panel session entitled Canadian Arctic Policy: Recent Developments and the Way Ahead, organized by the Centre for International Governance Innovation in Reykjavík, Iceland.

On September 29, 2016, Parliamentary Secretary Goldsmith-Jones, on behalf of Minister Dion, delivered remarks marking the 20th anniversary of the Arctic Council at Carleton University.

On March 10, 2016, Prime Minister Trudeau and President Obama held a joint press conference in Washington, D.C., on energy development, environmental protection, and Arctic leadership.
