Member, Ministerial Advisory Board

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is dedicated to safeguarding plants, animals and food. This enhances the health and well-being of Canada's people, environment and economy. The CFIA is also dedicated to excellence as a science-based regulator, trusted and respected by Canadians and the international community.

The CFIA, in collaboration and partnership with industry, consumers, and federal, provincial and municipal organizations, continues to work towards protecting Canadians from preventable health risks related to food and zoonotic diseases.

Immediate need to appoint (3 year term):

  • Board Members: up to 9 positions

Anticipatory: A pool of qualified candidates may be established to appoint similar positions.

Remuneration:

The Minister shall pay the Member the amount of $1,500.00 per meeting for work in relation to Board meetings. This fee is to cover any activities in relation to the meetings attended including, but not limited to, review of meeting materials, travel time, conference calls and for any meetings that may be necessary to provide instruction to the Member and to familiarize he or she with the operations of the Board and to otherwise carry out his or her duties as outlined the Membership Agreement. No payment shall be made if the Member does not attend a given meeting.

Each member shall be reimbursed, consistent with guidelines set forth by the National Joint Council Travel Directive, for reasonable travel and living expenses incurred while performing Board duties while absent from his or her ordinary place of residence.

Education and Experience

  • A degree from a recognized university or an acceptable combination of education, job-related training and/or experience relevant to the work of the CFIA;
  • Experience in positions of leadership;
  • Evidence of significant related work experience;
  • Experience dealing with senior officials in private or public sector organizations;
  • Significant management experience in private or public sector organizations; and

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the mandate and activities of CFIA as well as the legislative framework within which it operates;
  • Superior communication skills, both written and oral, including the ability to develop and maintain effective relationships;
  • Ability to place provincial/territorial items of interest into a national perspective;
  • Knowledge of sound governance principles;
  • A good understanding of the business, political, economic and operational challenges and opportunities facing at least one of the food, plant and animal health industries; and
  • Ability to anticipate emerging issues and to recommend strategies to quickly solve problems and seize opportunities.
