New special guiding lottery creates more opportunity and increases fairness for Yukon hunters

WHITEHORSE – The Government of Yukon will offer 125 special guiding licences through a lottery process for the 2016/17 hunting season, Minister of Environment Wade Istchenko announced today.

“The Government of Yukon is committed to promoting Yukon’s unique way of life through participation in hunting and the sustainable use of wildlife resources,” Istchenko said. “These amendments reflect the significant growth in interest of special guiding, and will offer more hunting opportunities and result in a fairer process for eligible Yukon hunters.”

This year’s 125 licences, up from 100 in 2015/16, will allow licenced Yukon hunters to guide a Canadian citizen or permanent resident who is not a resident of Yukon. Of these, hunters will have a choice between applying for a pool of 100 special guiding opportunities for moose and caribou or a new pool of 25 special guiding opportunities for bison. Each pool also includes opportunities to harvest black bear, coyote and wolf.

Hunters can submit their application between April 1 and April 22 at Environment Yukon district offices. The draw will occur on April 29. Successful licence recipients will be contacted and their licence numbers will be posted on Environment Yukon’s website.

Also new this year is the permitted use of motorized vehicles in order to retrieve and transport a harvested bison in the three-kilometre bison management zone between the Jarvis River and Silver City.

The special guiding licence FAQ and information about how to apply is available on the Environment Yukon website at www.env.gov.yk.ca and at all Environment Yukon district offices.

Yukon hunters are reminded that even if they possess a valid licence, they must still obtain written permission from a Yukon First Nation to hunt on Category A Settlement Land.
