WHITEHORSE—Standards for gender designation on drivers’ licences and general identification cards are changing in Yukon. Transgender Yukoners can now self-identify via a simple process.
“This change is another step toward inclusivity for all Yukoners,” Minister of Highways and Public Works Scott Kent said. “Identification needs to be secure, but it cannot be discriminatory. The steps we are taking will allow transgender individuals to update their information in a respectful and progressive manner.”
The new standards allow applicants to amend the gender on an existing Yukon driver’s licence or general identification card. New applicants or those surrendering an out-of-territory licence are also eligible to use their preferred gender designation.
Those wishing to change gender designation must provide either a signed designation form from a medical professional or an amended birth certificate.
