F.H. Collins Secondary School phase two work to begin in August

WHITEHORSE—A contract is signed for the completion of phase two site preparations for the new F.H. Collins Secondary School with work expected to start at the beginning of August and to be completed in October, Education Minister Scott Kent announced today.

“Workers will be onsite from late summer through early fall to finalize site preparations before the F.H. Collins replacement project goes full steam ahead next spring,” Kent said. “We are very excited to keep this project moving forward.”

Norcope Enterprises Ltd. has been awarded the $1.18 million contract. The work primarily involves connecting water mains to the school site from across Lewes Boulevard. Drivers in Riverdale should expect traffic delays while this work is being completed.

“Other phase two activities include the construction of an alternate bus loop located at the rear of the school, modifications to the main parking lot and the development of an access road to the lower soccer field which will be used as a staging area throughout the construction period,” Highways and Public Works minister Wade Istchenko said.

The upper soccer field and track will remain accessible to the school and the public throughout the construction period.

This summer’s construction work will be sequenced to help minimize any disruptions once construction of the school is underway.

The Yukon government will begin preparing a construction tender later this year. The new F.H. Collins Secondary School is scheduled to open for classes in fall 2015.
