Community Services closer to issuing new secure driver's licence and general identification card

WHITEHORSE – Community Services Minister Archie Lang has tabled an act to amend the motor vehicles act in the Yukon legislature.

“Amending the legislation brings us one step closer to providing the new secure driver’s licence and will allow us to issue Yukon’s first ever general identification card,” Lang said. “The new secure driver’s licence and ID card will meet North American driver’s licence standards and help to eliminate difficulties that some Yukon citizens have faced when using the current licence in other jurisdictions.”

Regulations are in development that will detail the information required by an applicant as proof of identification in order to obtain a Yukon driver’s licence or general identification card, as well as the cost of the card.

Consequential amendments to the Liquor Act will eliminate the current requirement for the Yukon Liquor Corporation to have its own system of liquor identification cards and result in liquor regulations that specify acceptable proof of age identification.

Yukon expects to issue the new secure driver’s licence and general identification card in the summer of 2010.
