Feedback wanted on draft Independent Power Production Policy

WHITEHORSE—The Yukon government is seeking feedback on independent power production.

In the 2009 Energy Strategy for Yukon the government committed to developing a policy enabling Yukon utilities to purchase electricity from independent power producers. The resulting draft policy was released for public consultation today.

“We’re eager to circulate our draft Independent Power Production Policy for Yukoners’ review and comments,” Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources Scott Kent said. “To fulfill our commitment to diversify our power supply we need input from our citizens to create the best policy possible.”

New solutions like an effective Independent Power Production Policy are essential so small producers can generate power to help the territory meet present and future power demands.

The consultation is designed to gather information from citizens, increase public awareness, create discussion among interested groups and ultimately contribute to an effective policy for Yukon.

Yukon government plans to gather feedback from the public through an open house scheduled for June 25 at the Energy Solutions Centre in Whitehorse.

The draft policy is available for review online at www.energy.gov.yk.ca/independent_power_production.html.

Comments can also be made by calling 867-393-7148 or 1-800-661-0408, ext. 7148 or by emailing energy@gov.yk.ca.

Feedback on the policy will be accepted until July 25.
