Yukon to host Canadian Forest Ministers in 2016

WHITEHORSE—Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources Scott Kent announced today that Yukon will host the Canadian Council of Forest Ministers (CCFM) annual meeting in 2016.

Minister Kent attended the CCFM meeting in Thunder Bay, Ontario, on July 10 after participating in the National Forest Innovation Summit in Kenora, Ontario, on July 8 and 9.

“We are pleased to be hosting forest ministers from across the country next summer,” Kent said . “This is an excellent opportunity to discuss important matters affecting Canada’s forestry sector and to increase the profile of Yukon and its forestry industry to a national audience.”

The CCFM meetings in Yukon will further strengthen territorial and provincial partnerships, contribute positive benefits to Yukon’s tourism sector and demonstrate the Yukon government’s capacity to lead on the national stage.

“The Yukon government is continuing to implement the Forest Resources Act and is working with Yukon First Nations to develop viable and sustainable forest-based industries across the territory,” Kent added.

The Canadian Council of Forest Ministers is a national forum to provide leadership and generate action on forestry-related matters. It is composed of 14 federal, provincial and territorial ministers. Each year, the role of chairing this council rotates across jurisdictions according to a pre-determined schedule. The 2014/15 CCFM Chair is Ontario.
