WHITEHORSE— The Government of Yukon is contributing $300,000 from the Northern Housing Trust to Habitat for Humanity Yukon to continue its good work in developing affordable homes for the Yukoners in need.
“Habitat for Humanity Yukon and its many volunteers and supporters are working to provide low-income Yukoners with a safe, comfortable and affordable place to live and raise a family,” Minister responsible for Yukon Housing Corporation Brad Cathers said. “Habitat for Humanity is a respected community partner in the development of affordable housing and we are proud to support its work.”
The Yukon government has supported Habitat for Humanity Yukon since 2009 with the donation of building lots and through an operating agreement with Yukon Housing Corporation. This agreement has provided first mortgages for Habitat clients valued at approximately $1.7 million. This partnership makes home ownership possible for low-income Yukon families who would not qualify for a regular mortgage and for whom home ownership would otherwise be difficult or impossible.
“Our partnership with the Yukon government is unique in Canada,” president of Habitat for Humanity Yukon Arthur Mitchell said. “We are very grateful for the support we’ve received to help deserving families achieve their dream of home ownership.”
Through the considerable contributions of local businesses and organizations and its team of dedicated construction volunteers, Habitat for Humanity Yukon has to date constructed 12 homes for Yukon families. A two-family duplex is currently under construction in the Whistle Bend subdivision. Habitat for Humanity has also completed a triplex housing project in partnership with the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations, the first project of its kind in Canada to be built on First Nation settlement land.
“Habitat for Humanity Yukon is a catalyst for affordable home ownership,” Chair of the Yukon Housing Corporation Board Janet Moodie said. “Twelve families are now homeowners due to Habitat for Humanity Yukon and their numerous volunteers who share a vision that is achievable with strong partnerships and support from the community.”
