Indspire Awards Ceremony

Ottawa, Ontario, Friday, March 24, 2017

It’s a great honour and a privilege to be patron of Indspire and to be part of tonight’s celebration of excellence.

I would like to begin by acknowledging that this gathering is taking place on Algonquin traditional territory.

Yesterday, we hosted the recipients of these awards at a reception at Rideau Hall. During that gathering, we took the opportunity to pause for an official photograph together.

It’s a photo I will always cherish, because it’s a picture of outstanding leaders in the arts, business, commerce, culture, heritage, spirituality, education, health, law, justice, politics, public service and sports.

It’s a picture of both lifetime achievement and of the potential of youth.

It’s a picture of the future, one in which First Nations, Métis and Inuit people of all ages and backgrounds are celebrated for transforming Canada for the better.

These awards are important, and this is an important ceremony.

Our success as individuals, as communities, as a country depends on our ability to unlock the potential of all members of our society.

One way we do that is by recognizing great achievement and leadership and celebrating excellence where we see it.

By doing so, we encourage others to follow along the same path. Success leads to more success in a virtuous circle.

On behalf of all Canadians, I would like to offer my sincere thanks and congratulations to this year’s laureates, who are so deserving of our admiration.

Kit-chi meegwetch to you all.

Have a wonderful evening, everyone!
