Business Environment
Brazil, the largest economy in the region, has faced deterioration in its macroeconomic, investment and political environment, with high inflation, a depreciating currency and economic contraction. Significant political changes are expected by September 2016, with a high probability of a new favorable political and business environment, potentially leading to market friendly reforms. Brazil features a diversified economy and export base, along with a solid, strongly regulated banking system. Although foreign trade only represents about 20% of its GDP, Brazil is the second largest exporter in Latin America. Brazil presents many opportunities for Canadian companies in a number of sectors, however, expensive tax regimes, heavy bureaucracy and political uncertainty continue to present challenges for Canadian exporters and investors.
