Science at the CFIA

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is Canada's largest science-based regulator. We work with federal, provincial and territorial science organizations, industry, universities and other partners to support and develop science that contributes to evidence-based decisions that better protect Canada's food, animal and plant resources.

Over 1,300 scientific staff work across the country in laboratories, regional offices and at CFIA headquarters, in roles ranging from veterinarians to research scientists. They conduct diagnostic and research activities, risk assessments, and surveillance activities in an effort to safeguard food, animals and plants, which enhances the health and well-being of Canada's people, environment and economy.
