Planning the Capital

In 2017, we will roll out two major plans that will guide the improvement of the Capital Region over the next decade and beyond, to the bicentennial of Canada in 2067:

The Plan for Canada’s Capital, 2017–2067 lays out a broad vision for the future of the Capital
The Capital Illumination Plan, 2017–2027 provides guidelines to enhance the beauty and safety of the Capital after dark

Confederation Pavilions

One of the real pleasures of exploring cities is discovering places of interest that are not marked on the usual visitor maps. As the steward of hundreds of properties in Canada’s Capital, many of great heritage significance, the NCC is well positioned to open some of those doors.

To celebrate 150 years of Confederation, we identified some of our most distinctive, but underused buildings, and set out to find inspired partners to breathe life back into them, as we celebrate this milestone year of 2017.

50 Sussex Drive

The International Pavilion. From February 3 to May 27, 2017: Public diplomacy exhibits and initiatives presented by international missions to Canada.

531 Sussex Drive will welcome the Polish diplomatic mission to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary.

The International Pavilion. In 2017, the 7 Clarence Street will welcome 10 diplomatic missions to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary.

The Global Pluralism Pavilion

Visit 330 Sussex Drive in 2017, and explore the mission and work of the Global Centre for Pluralism.

The Authors Pavilion

Maison Charron in Gatineau is home to the Association des auteurs et des auteures de l’Outaouais. In 2017, the Authors Pavilion will feature cultural and literacy programs, including “Concerts à la Maison.”

We have restored the Dairy Building at Rideau Hall, and given it new life as the Winter Pavilion.

The Canadiana Pavilion

The O’Brien House is being restored as the Kincora Boutique Hotel. In 2017, it will feature a special space called the Canadiana Room, where you can discover treasures from the NCC’s Crown Collection.

The Ecology and Urban Agriculture Pavilion

Special 2017 programming is offered from March 21 to September 21: an exhibition on the history and present-day reality of agriculture and forestry in the Outaouais Region.

The Modern Architecture Pavilion

The Strutt Foundation is rehabilitating the Strutt House as a teaching model in architecture and heritage conservation.

The Kabeshinân Minitig Pavilion

Work on the property at 150 Middle Street on Victoria Island is almost finished and discussions continue with our Algonquin partners regarding possible programming for the summer.

The Pioneer Pavilion

The Log Farm, at 670 Cedarview Road in Ottawa, will become the Pioneer Pavilion in 2017.

Enhanced public programs

Residents and visitors will also be invited to experience unique and enhanced public programs in Gatineau Park, on the Rideau Canal Skateway and during Sunday Bikedays.

Introduction of a unique tulip species for Canada’s 150th anniversary

Supporting our partners

We continue to work behind the scenes in support of partner initiatives, including major events organized by Canadian Heritage, such as Canada Day and Winterlude. We are also facilitating special events in the Capital in 2017, including Red Bull Crashed Ice in Ottawa and MosaïCanada 150/2017 in Gatineau.
