Transportation safety investigations

Each year, approximately 3000 transportation occurrences (accidents and incidents) are reported to the TSB. From aircraft part failures and ship fires to pipeline ruptures and train derailments. As a result of these reports, the TSB conducts some 60 - 70 class 2 or class 3 investigations.

When the TSB is notified of an occurrence, it assesses the circumstances to determine if an investigation is warranted. Investigations must have a high probability of advancing transportation safety and reduce risks to persons, property or the environment (see the investigation process and the Occurrence Classification Policy).
