The Government of Canada is committed to enhancing our collective security and protecting our rights and freedoms. Thousands of Canadians provided their thoughts and opinions through an unprecedented consultation on national security. This valuable input contributed to the proposed National Security Act, 2017, which can be explained under three themes.
Enhancing accountability and transparency
The consultation on national security demonstrated a demand for increased accountability and transparency on national security. The Government is taking action to meet this demand through new and proposed measures as outlined in this section.
Fulfilling commitments to address former C-51
Canadians were clear in the consultation they expect their rights and freedoms to be protected at the same time as their security. The proposed measures outlined in this section would ensure the former C-51 meets this expectation.
Strengthening security and protecting rights
As the threat environment has evolved, so too must the legislative landscape and the political environment in which it operates. The proposed measures outlined in this section would strengthen Canada's ability to address new threats and safeguard Canadian's rights and freedoms.
