Did you know?

Between 2000 and 2012, parental leave benefits were extended from 10 to 35 weeks, same-sex marriage was legalized, Quebec Parental Insurance Plan started offering paternity benefits to fathers, and the Universal Child Care Benefit and Family Caregiver Tax Credit were introduced.

Information collected in surveys like the General Social Survey on Family helps paint a more accurate picture of the diversity of Canadian families and contributes to the implementation of social programs such as these, which meet the needs of all Canadians.

The 2017 Aboriginal Peoples Survey is currently being conducted. It will provide valuable insights into employment, skills and training, education, and health of First Nations people living off reserve, Métis and Inuit. Names were chosen at random from all the individuals who identified themselves as Aboriginal people in the 2016 Census of Population.

Tourism spending in Canada grew 2.2% in the third quarter of 2016, following a 1.1% gain in the second quarter. This was the 14th consecutive quarterly increase and the largest since the second quarter of 1997. Both tourism spending by Canadians at home and by international visitors in Canada posted strong growth in the third quarter, totaling $21.3 billion.
