Discover what the Governor General does
The Governor General plays an important social role by encouraging and celebrating the work of volunteers across Canada. To do so, he highlights the importance of volunteerism in his speeches, meets with charitable organizations, and celebrates the achievements of exemplary volunteers. He also extends patronage to philanthropic organizations, associations and initiatives.
In addition, His Excellency has made it his personal mission to help build a better, smarter and more caring society. Accordingly, he has made volunteerism and philanthropy one of the three pillars of his mandate. Learn more about his contributions to this field: Philanthropy and Volunteerism.
Participate in the My Giving Moment campaign
Inspired by His Excellency, My Giving Moment is a national multimedia campaign that encourages Canadians to think about what they have to give and then act upon those opportunities. Please visit mygivingmoment.ca to read the many stories of people who have had memorable experiences helping others, and to share your own stories.
Nominate someone for the Caring Canadian Award
The Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award recognizes individuals who volunteer their time to help others. Do you know someone in your community who deserves this unique award? Did you know that you can nominate them? The process is simple and accessible to all.
In class, go through the nomination process together and talk about different volunteers that you know: decide which ones deserve the award. Fill out a form for each nomination you want to make and submit it to the Office of the Secretary to the Governor General. It’s as simple as that! This will help us to find all these volunteers whose compassion and engagement are so much a part of who we are as a nation.
