Five-time World Series champion Derek Jeter had the final at-bat of his career this past weekend, and it couldn’t have been any more “Jeter-esque”. As one of baseball’s all time greats called it a career in spectacular fashion, Olympic.ca takes a look back at some of the greatest athlete farewells.

Derek Jeter (2014)

Kicking things off with the man that inspired this list. The 20-year New York Yankee vet bid farewell to the pinstripe faithfuls with a dramatic walk-off hit in his last home game ever. “Captain Clutch” followed that up with an RBI single in the final plate appearance of his career.

Ted Williams (1960)

The legendary slugger capped off a Hall of Fame career with a home run in his final at-bat.

John Elway (1999)

At age 38, John Elway retired after leading the Broncos to back-to-back championships, while becoming the oldest player in NFL history to grab Super Bowl MVP honours.

Brent Hayden (2012)

The Canadian swimmer captured a long awaited Olympic bronze at the London 2012 games in his final 100m freestyle race, Canada’s first ever Olympic medal in the event.

Michael Jordan (1998)

“Air Jordan” hitting the championship winning shot in his final game with the Bulls was the exclamation point to an incredible six-title run in Chicago.

Clara Hughes (2010)

A six-time Olympic medallist, Clara Hughes closed out her illustrious speed skating career on home soil at the 2010 Vancouver Games, where she won bronze in the 5000m.

Alexandre Bilodeau (2014)

Alex Bilodeau ended his Olympic career on top, becoming the first freestyle skier to successfully defend his title.

Raymond Bourque (2001)

It took one of hockey’s greatest defencemen 22 years to win his first championship, which made watching number 77 lift Lord Stanley’s cup even sweeter.

Jennifer Heil (2011)

The Olympic champion wrapped-up a prolific freestyle skiing career by grabbing 2011 World Championship gold in both the single and dual mogul events.
