Their Excellencies to Welcome
Canadian Armed Forces Troops Home from Afghanistan

OTTAWA—Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston will join the Right Honourable Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada, and Mrs. Laureen Harper, as well as General Tom Lawson, Chief of the Defence Staff, in welcoming back to Canada the last 84 members of the Canadian Armed Forces who were serving in Afghanistan. This ceremony will take place on March 18, 2014, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., at the Canada Reception Centre (Hangar 11, Uplands).

On this occasion, His Excellency, as commander-in-chief, will greet and address the returning troops, as well as meet with their families.

“I am extremely grateful for and recognize the dedication and sacrifices made by the more than 40 000 members who served in the Canadian Armed Forces mission in Afghanistan,” said the Governor General. “On behalf of all Canadians, I would like to thank each and every one of these men and women in uniform, as well as their families, for representing our country with great distinction and for working selflessly to help the Afghan people rebuild their lives.”
