Explore Canada’s rich immigration history at the Museum, online and on the road with us!

At the Museum

Discover the Museum’s main exhibition dedicated to the years when Pier 21 was open as an immigration shed. Hear the personal stories of diverse immigrants from all over the world in our 20 minute contemporary bilingual film in Canada. Be sure to research your family’s immigration history in the Scotiabank Family History Centre and contribute your immigration story to our growing collection. Or stop by to see our temporary and community partnership exhibitions on display in the Ralph and Rose Chiodo Harbourside Gallery. Also, find unique treasures in our one-of-a-kind Gift Shop and don’t forget to grab a snack at The Gateway Café while you’re here.

Online

For people young and old wishing to learn more about a specific country’s immigration to Canada, start by exploring our online Culture Trunks. Each Culture Trunk serves as a wonderful introduction to our broader archives. And, since the Trunks are updated as people submit their stories, photos and documents to the Museum’s collections, there is always something new to discover!

Out and About

In 2012, Kirin Brown, the Museum’s former Oral History Researcher, together with Cassidy Bankson, our former Oral Historian and portrait photographer, Naomi Harris, visited people and places across the country gathering content for the temporary exhibition, Shaping Canada: Exploring Our Cultural Landscapes. Read all about Kirin’s experiences on the road interviewing everyday Canadians, learning about some of the distinct cultures that make up our country and her first impressions of some of Canada’s most beautiful places.
