Zaynê Akyol's feature documentary Gulîstan, Land of Roses has its world premiere in International Competition at Visions du Réel Festival in Switzerland.
Zaynê Akyol's first feature documentary, Gulîstan, Land of Roses (Périphéria Productions/Mîtosfilm/NFB), will have its world premiere in the International Competition at the Visions du Réel International Documentary Film Festival in Nyon, Switzerland. The film follows Kurdish female fighters who share their revolutionary and feminist ideals as they fight for their territory and wage war against ISIS, the so-called Islamic State group. Directed by a young and talented filmmaker, this powerful look at a red-hot topic affirms the NFB's ongoing support for auteur documentaries destined for the big screen. The 47th edition of Visions du Réel, one of the most important festivals dedicated to documentary film, will run from April 15 to 23, 2016.

THREE NFB ANIMATED SHORTS TO SCREEN IN ANNECY FESTIVAL OFFICIAL COMPETITION Filmmakers Franck Dion and Theodore Ushev make highly anticipated return to Annecy
The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) is taking part in the Annecy International Animation Film Festival with three short films in the official competition. This year's NFB lineup includes the return to Annecy of renowned animators Franck Dion, with the world premiere of The Head Vanishes (Papy 3D/NFB/ARTE France), and Theodore Ushev, with Blind Vaysha (NFB), while Janice Nadeau will be making her solo directorial debut with Mamie (Folimage/NFB). All three films feature unusual female characters with unique destinies. The world's largest event devoted to animation, the Annecy Festival, taking place June 13 to 18, 2016, hosts the industry's leading creators and professionals. This year, 1,167 short films were submitted to Annecy, of which 54 were selected for the official competition.

National Film Board of Canada commits 50 percent of its production budget to films by women.
The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) will be ensuring that at least half of its productions will be directed by women and half of all production spending will be allocated to films directed by women, NFB head Claude Joli-Coeur announced at a Vancouver International Women in Film Festival panel taking place on March 8, International Women’s Day.

A competition for emerging French-speaking filmmakers in Canada. NFB announces the four Tremplin 2016 competition finalists: filmmakers from Acadie, Alberta and British Columbia.
The finalists in the ninth edition of the Tremplin competition (in French), organized by the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) in collaboration with Radio-Canada, have been announced: Kevin Arseneau (from Rogersville, New Brunswick), André Roy (from Dieppe, New Brunswick), Colin Champagne (from Edmonton, Alberta) and Julien Capraro (from Vancouver, British Columbia). They were chosen from among participants from across French-speaking Canada. The two winners-one for Acadie and one for Western Canada-will be selected in April, after the jury has assessed the finalists' scripts. The winners' films will be produced at the Canadian Francophonie Studio – Acadie in Moncton, or the Canadian Francophonie Studio in Toronto, depending on the winners' home region. Both of the winners' documentaries will be broadcast on Radio-Canada, a partner of the Tremplin competition since its inception.

NFB offers a foray into virtual reality with four immersive works at the REGARD Festival in Saguenay
The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) invites audiences to sample four of its VR productions at the 20th REGARD Festival, taking place March 16 to 20, 2016, in Saguenay, Quebec. Viewers can plunge into the virtual-reality memories of a WWI photographer or perhaps try their hand at making life-and-death decisions on board a self-driving car in the following immersive works, which will be presented on Saturday, March 19, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the festival's Espace NFB in the Hôtel Chicoutimi: Loïc Suty's The Unknown Photographer (Turbulent/NFB), Vincent Morisset's Way to Go (NFB/France Télévisions/AATOAA), Munro Ferguson's Minotaur (NFB) and Vincent McCurley's Cardboard Crash (NFB). In addition to these VR titles, all of which have received an enthusiastic response on the national and international festival circuit, the festival is screening a strong and varied lineup of NFB short documentary and animated films.

Taking place March 3 to 23, 2016, the RVF's 18th edition will feature NFB screenings in all 10 of Canada's provinces and its three territories. Francophone and francophile communities across the country will have access to three film programs offering something for viewers of all ages. The NFB will present a total of 236 free screenings in 60 cities, with 22 cities added to the NFB's RVF tour just this year. And there will be more to view at ONF.ca: Si le temps le permet (If the Weather Permits) by Élisapie Isaac, a spokesperson for the 2016 RVF, who delves deeply into her Inuit roots in this very personal documentary; and the website Échos – La francophonie dans tous ses états, where you can watch 20 films from 12 countries on the diversity of ways to express emotions in French.

Making her directorial debut, Attiya Khan is working with veteran filmmaker Lawrence Jackman on a highly anticipated feature documentary that will radically reframe the conversation about domestic violence by including the abuser in the discussion. The film will be released in early 2017, distributed by the NFB.

New NFB documentary Quand ferme l'usine, by Simon Rodrigue, to screen at the Outaouais Film Festival
Fresh from its world premiere at the Rendez-vous du cinéma québécois on February 22, the feature documentary Quand ferme l'usine (When the Mill Closes), directed by Simon Rodrigue and produced by the National Film Board of Canada (NFB), will screen at the Outaouais Film Festival (OFF) on March 18, in French, with the filmmaker in attendance. Shot in Smooth Rock Falls, Ontario, among other locations, the film reveals the impact of widespread pulp and paper mill closings across Canada. The documentary is now touring the country, with screenings in several regions, including Trois-Rivières, Quebec, on May 5. The 18th Outaouais Film Festival runs from March 17 to 24, 2016.

Roy, Dialogue(s) by Philippe David Gagné, Help! by Noémie Payant-Hébert, Une bonne récolte (A Good Harvest) by Bogdan Stefan, and Une nuit (One Night) by Serge Bordeleau. Three NFB films will be screening in official competition: the animated Autos Portraits (Carface) by Claude Cloutier and If I Was G o d … (Si j'étais le bon Dieu…) by Cordell Barker, and the documentary Nowhere Land (Entre-deux) by Bonnie Ammaaq. Caroline Monnet's Mobilize (Mobiliser) and Claude Cloutier's ever-popular Isabelle au bois dormant (Sleeping Betty) are also on the program. Lastly, a number of virtual reality projects produced by the NFB will be presented in the Espace NFB at the Hôtel Chicoutimi on Saturday, March 19. On Saturday, February 27, the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) will be offering three free activities downtown during Nuit blanche à Montréal at the MONTRÉAL EN LUMIÈRE festival, two of which will continue through March break, February 29 to March 4. There's something for everyone: the NFB #GIFnTAKE booth, workshops featuring the StopMo Studio app, and a reimagining of Michèle Lemieux's NFB-produced animated film Le grand ailleurs et le petit ici (Here and the Great Elsewhere) projected onto the facade of the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) Design pavilion.
