ARCHIVED – Notice – Passport Canada – Free replacement of Canadian passports that were lost or damaged as a result of recent disasters

July 26, 2013 — New measures are in place to provide free replacement of Canadian passports that were lost or damaged as a result of the following disasters:

• Southern Alberta floods (applications received until September 19, 2013)
• Lac-Mégantic explosion (applications received until October 5, 2013)

The replacement passport will be valid for the same duration as that of the original.

How to obtain a free replacement

Canadian passport holders whose passports were lost or damaged during the above-listed disasters will be provided with a replacement at no cost. They must reside in an area with one of the following postal codes:

Alberta floods:

• Calgary: T2G, T2N, T2P, T2R, T2S, T2T, T3B
• Medicine Hat: T1A, T1B, T1C
• High River: T1V
• Canmore: T1W
• Tsuu T'ina Nation: T2W 6H6
• Stoney Nation: T0L 1N0
• Siksika Nation: T0J 3W0

Lac-Mégantic explosion:

• G6B

Passport holders must apply for a passport either in person at one of the 34 passport offices, by mail, or at the following Service Canada Centres:

Alberta: Calgary East, Calgary North, Calgary South, Medicine Hat, Red Deer, Canmore, Brooks and Lethbridge.

Lac-Mégantic: Thetford Mines, Sherbrooke and Asbestos.

What to submit

Adult applicants (age 16 years and above):

• a completed Adult Simplified Renewal Application (PDF, 414 KB) form;
• two new passport photos (the cost will not be reimbursed);
• the previous passport, if available;
• supporting identification, if available, if the previous passport was lost and cannot be submitted;
• proof of residence in an affected area in the form of a document issued by a federal, provincial or municipal organization or a Red Cross registration card; and
• a completed Declaration concerning a lost, stolen, inaccessible, damaged or found Canadian travel document (PDF, 149 KB).

If applying for a child (0 to 15 years of age), please submit the following:

• a completed Child Application (PDF, 473 KB) form;
• two new passport photos (the cost will not be reimbursed);
• the previous passport, if available;
• child's proof of Canadian citizenship;
• proof of parentage;
• proof of legal guardianship (if applicable);
• all documents that refer to custody and/ or mobility of, or access to the child; and
• proof of residence of parent in an affected area in the form of a document issued by a federal, provincial or municipal organization or a Red Cross registration card;
• a completed Declaration concerning a lost, stolen, inaccessible, damaged or found Canadian travel document (PDF, 149 KB).

We encourage Canadians affected by these disasters who are not planning to travel in the immediate future to send their application by mail or to wait to apply in person until the high volume that Passport Canada is currently experiencing subsides.
