This year's L.A. Auto Show was all about the SUV – and 755-horsepower Corvettes

Auto show season is in full force. And where Frankfurt and Tokyo were all about autonomy and electrons, there’s one recurring and resounding theme at this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show – SUVs, and lots of ’em.

Of course, looking past the mountain of SUVs, the show still had plenty of gems. Making its North American debut for the first time, the Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 easily takes the cake simply for existing. Naturally, with a 755-horsepower supercharged V8 under the hood plus a whole host of go-fast bits, the ZR-1 promises to be an absolute monster. That’s just the tip of the iceberg – other hits include the long-awaited BMW i8 Roadster and the reborn (and iconic) Jeep Wrangler.

That said, more than a few debuts left us feeling a little lukewarm; the Lincoln Nautilus is little more than a facelifted and renamed MKX, while the three-row Lexus RX L will surely be tight out back. Don’t get us started on Mitsubishi taking a storied nameplate and slapping it on the back of a crossover, while the Nissan Kicks seems to just phone it in.
