Philanthropist, politician and merchant James McGill died at Montréal. Born in Scotland, McGill migrated to the American colonies and became a major player in the fur trade south of the Great Lakes. Moving to Montréal, McGill became a charter member of the Beaver Club and made the city his permanent home in 1774. He left behind a large endowment of land and funds to establish what would become McGill University.
