Volunteering with Collections

These positions are based at the museum's research and collections facility in Gatineau, Quebec.

On-the-job training is provided.

Specimen Collections

What you would do:

  • Assist with projects in botany, zoology, mineral sciences and/or palaeobiology.

Duties may include

  • Mounting plant specimens onto archival paper
  • Scanning specimens to create digital images
  • Capturing digital images
  • Editing digital images
  • Scanning and digitizing slides and data records
  • Sorting reference literature and incorporating into our reference-collection shelves
  • Entering information into Excel spreadsheets or databases.
  • Organizing backlogged material on shelves
  • Inventorying backlogged material for processing
  • Processing new and backlogged zoological specimens
  • Sorting, organizing, counting, identifying and labeling specimens
  • Transcribing data from specimen labels.

Good for people with:

  • A background knowledge in specific natural-history fields
  • A background knowledge in specimen preparation or museological practice
  • Attention to detail
  • Reliable transportation to the location in Gatineau, Quebec.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English or French
  • An ability to speak another language may come in handy.

Time commitment:

  • All year
  • Monday – Friday
  • During business hours
  • One half or one full day per week.

Library and Archives

What you would do:

  • Organize reference materials
  • Enter information into a database
  • Catalogue and shelve books and archival materials.

Good for people with:

  • A background knowledge in library science
  • A background knowledge in basic museological practice
  • Attention to detail
  • Proficiency with computers
  • Reliable transportation to the location in Gatineau, Quebec.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English or French
  • An ability to speak another language may come in handy.

Time commitment:

  • All year
  • Monday – Friday
  • During business hours
  • One half or one full day per week.
