Canoe Kayak Canada offers the following NCCP workshops:
CanoeKids: Targeting coaches of athletes in the Fundamentals and Active for Life stages of athlete development, this 10-hour workshop strives to help coaches deliver developmentally appropriate programming. Coaches learn how to teach the foundations; balance, propulsion, and steering. They achieve this through the use of games that develop participants’ fundamental skills and techniques. Emphasis is placed on ensuring a fun and safe environment for skill development.
Pool Kayak Instructor: Targeting coaches of athletes in the Fundamentals and Active for Life stages of athlete development, this one day course educates instructors on how to teach basic strokes, propulsion, and wet-exits from a kayak. No other certification is required. This course is well-suited to lifeguards and those who would like to learn how to teach introductory paddling skills.
Competition – Introduction, Entry Level Competitive Coach: Designed for coaches of athletes in the Learn to Train, Train to Train and Active for Life stages of athlete development, this workshop can be taken by small boats, war canoe, marathon, or dragon boat coaches. The focus of this workshop is to develop a coach’s ability to design, structure, and implement a sprint canoe/kayak practice. This includes teaching techniques as well as analyzing and correcting it.
Competition – Introduction, Entry Level Competitive Coach – Advanced Gradation: Designed for coaches of Learn to Train and Train to Train stage athletes, this workshop will prepare, and further develop coaches, to ensure they can provide appropriate development activities to athletes in the U13 and U15 club programs. The focus of this workshop will be on developing practice plans, developing a seasonal plan, learning to manage athletes in competition, and learning advanced technical analysis.
Competition – Introduction, Whitewater (ELCC): This workshop is designed for a multidiscipline club coach and will focus on planning a basic practice. Coaches will work through the introduction of basic canoe polo, slalom, whitewater, and freestyle skills. This 1-day workshop ensures coaches are comfortable with the error detection and correction strategies required to support athlete development.
Competition – Development, Slalom Competition: Designed for coaches of athletes in the Train to Win stage of development that are specialized in the slalom discipline. Coaches will learn advanced performance analysis techniques applicable to both training and competition. This workshop includes 1 day of training and 10 hours of mentorship in the field.
Competition – Development, Sprint Competition: This workshop is designed for coaches of athletes in the Train to Train and Train to Compete stages of development. Over two 3-day periods, this workshop will develop and prepare coaches to be the head coach of a club or provincial program, and coach athletes competing at the National Championship, Canada Games, or Junior World Championship level. Focus will be on analyzing both technical and tactical performance of Train to Compete athletes, and creating performance plans, including advanced practice plans, yearly training plans, mesocycle and microcycle plans, and tapering and peaking plans.
Instruction – Beginner, Lake Kayak Instructor: In this workshop, instructors will learn to refine basic kayak skills and to prepare developmental athletes and those in the Active for Life stage for whitewater. The focus of this 1-day workshop will be on rolling, edging and the basic stroke.
Instruction – Intermediate, River Kayak Instructor 2 Leader 2: This workshop is designed for instructors aiming to teach clinics or work at kayak schools. Over 4 days, instructors will learn to teach skills needed to introduce intermediate paddlers to class II whitewater. Focus will be on teaching skills, the demonstration of class II river maneuvers, providing participants with feedback, reading and describing river feature, risk management, and site selection on the river.
Instruction – Advanced, Whitewater Instructor 3 Leader 3: This workshop is designed for instructors aiming to teach clinics or work at kayak schools and will teach them the skills needed to introduce intermediate paddlers to class III whitewater. Over 3 days instructors will focus on risk management and site selection on grade III rivers, planning a whitewater lesson passport, demonstration of quality class III whitewater maneuvers, and the boat-blade-body detection process.
NOTE: All canoe/kayak coaches entering the NCCP to become trained or certified coaches at ANY LEVEL must acquire their Pleasure Craft Operator Card.
