Centennial of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission

His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, attended the ceremony marking the centennial of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) at the Canadian War Museum on June 13, 2017.
On this occasion, the Governor General, along with CWGC member government representatives, laid a wreath in Memorial Hall.
The CWGC was founded in 1917 with the mission of commemorating in perpetuity the 1.7 million Commonwealth servicemen and women who died in the two world wars. No distinction is made on account of military or civil rank, race or creed.
The CWGC cares for war graves, cemeteries and memorials at a staggering 23 000 locations in 154 countries. It is funded by six member governments—the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Canada and India—in proportion to their losses.
The Governor General also delivered a speech on this occasion:"Today is a day to reflect on the importance of all that you do, and to remember the fallen. What you do it so important. You help us honour those brave individuals who served their countries." You help us remember them.
The Honourable Kent Hehr, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, also delivered remarks.
Brigadier General (ret'd) David Kettle, CWGC Secretary General, offered closing remarks and explained the importance of the work conducted to honour the fallen.
