A city councillor believes people of all ages and abilities should be able to play on Calgary’s many playgrounds.

CALGARY — Minor hockey parents in Calgary will soon have to take a refresher every four years of an online course designed to limit bad behaviour at the rink.

The last few weeks in Alberta politics have generated extensive conversation on gay-straight alliances and the role schools should or should not play exposing the emerging sexuality choices of students to their parents.

I remember my public shaming as though it happened yesterday. I was acting up when my teacher imposed a time out on a hard bench outside the classroom.

While there is no exact definition for nutrition nudging, you experience “nudging” every day from a wide range of marketers and advertisers in just about any type of business you can think of. The sales tactic of nudging involves making an item look appealing or easy to grab. The key with nudging is to walk the fine line of not being so subtle the cue to make a decision is lost and not being too forceful that the cue to make a decision repels. If you are the health leader of the family and have struggled to sell the benefit of a healthy diet to your significant other or kids, you may have been met with resistance and limited success. Instead of trying to nag or coax them to eat healthy, try the gentler and likely more effective approach of nutrition nudging.

My father was a stickler for many things, including table manners. When he grew weary of telling his children to chew with their mouths closed, get their elbows off the table or use a knife and not a finger to get peas onto a fork, he would threaten to send us to manners camp.
