    Dr Lindsay Lachance as Artistic Associate of Indigenous Theatre

    Incoming Artistic Associate, Lindsay Lachance, succesfully defended her PhD Dissertation entitled Relational Indigenous Dramaturgies as Embodied Politics. Dr. Lindsay Lachance will be joining the NAC in March 2018!

    NAC Appoints Lori Marchand as First Managing Director of Indigenous Theatre

    The National Arts Centre (NAC) is very pleased to announce that Lori Marchand, the longstanding, highly-respected Executive Director of Western Canada Theatre in Kamloops, British Columbia will be the first Managing Director of Indigenous Theatre at the National Arts Centre. She will take up her post in April 2018.

    June has been a month for the ages! It has been a time for gatherings, new beginnings, a time of celebration. It has been a month when Indigenous Artists, Elders and Algonquin culture makers have been spending a lot of time at the NAC, which is situated on unceded Algonquin territory, and it has been fantastic.   • The NAC announces its first Artistic Director for the Indigenous Theatre Department

    The National Arts Centre’s President and CEO, Peter Herrndorf announced today that Kevin Loring will be the first ever Artistic Director of Indigenous Theatre at the NAC, taking up his post on October 16, 2017.

    May is the time of the Tulip Festival in Ottawa, they are everywhere! But it is also a major ramp up to summer and the announcement of the Artistic Director for the Indigenous Theatre at the NAC.  Here are some of things that happened with Indigenous Theatre this month.

    There has been a lot of news this month!

    It was exciting to see the recent appointment of Christine Sokaymoh Frederick to the position of Associate Artist at The Citadel Theatre in Edmonton, and to see the rave reviews and huge response to Cliff Cardinal’s Huff at The Sydney Theatre Festival. It was equally exciting to see Mayor Naheed Nenshi’s response to Article 11’s Declaration which recently played in Calgary as part of High Performance Rodeo.     2017 has arrived!

    2017. The year the first Artistic Director of Indigenous Theatre begins their role at the National Arts Centre! It has arrived.  Getting to here has been a full and rewarding time and we are now up to the final bend in the road. Interviews for the applicants are taking place in February. The Elders Council will be meeting as a group for the first time during that month as well, and the Advisory Committee continues its work supporting all the endeavours.     What a year!

    The Indigenous Theatre is hiring...

    On November 3rd, 2016 the hiring notice for the NAC’s first Artistic Director of Indigenous Theatre was issued by Human Resources. The Advisory Committee comprised of Reneltta Arluk, Dave Jennis, Annie Smith St. Georges, Jesse Wabegijig, and Kenneth T.     Since the July update, the Advisory Committee:  Annie Smith St. Georges, Jesse Wabegijig, Kenneth T.     July Update on Indigenous Theatre

    Since our last update to you, the Advisory Committee:  Annie Smith St. Georges, Jesse Wabegijig, Kenneth T. Williams, Reneltta Arluk, and Dave Jenniss along with Sarah Garton Stanley, Brittany Ryan, have been enjoying the Summer.

    First meeting about Indigenous Theatre Department at the NAC

    On October 5, 2015 a meeting was held at the Artscape Sandbox in Toronto, Ontario between Peter Herrndorf, President and CEO of Canada’s National Arts Centre and  Indigenous Theatre Community Members from across Turtle Island to share news about plans for an Indigenous Theatre Department at the National Arts Centre. This lunchtime meeting was attended by artists and students and was livestreamed to share the news widely across the Indigenous Performance Community.
