  • Click "Click here to start a new discussion thread" below to start a new thread.
  • Please start new threads under a level-2 heading, using double equals-signs and an informative title: ==Informative title==. If a thread is related to an ongoing discussion, consider placing it under a level-3 heading within that discussion.
  • You should generally notify any user who is the subject of a discussion. You may use {{ping}} to do so, or simply link their username when you post your comment.
It is not required to contact students when their edits are only being discussed in the context of a class-wide problem.

  • Please sign all contributions, using four tilde characters "~~~~".
  • If discussion is already ongoing elsewhere or if there is a more natural location for a discussion, please continue the discussion there, and put a short note with a link to the relevant location on this page.

Managing threads

By default, threads will be automatically archived by a bot after 5 days of inactivity. If you'd like to make sure a thread does not get archived, use {{Do not archive until}} at the top of the section. Use {{User:ClueBot III/ArchiveNow}} within a section to have it archived (more or less) immediately.

  • As of now, I'm neutral because of 2 main reasons. One, most of your contributions are using automated tools to make changes and don't demonstrate actual editing or understanding of policies. Two, you disclosed that you had other accounts in question 2. This raised a red flag because we had an issue which used multiple accounts and engaged in deep-reception scheme in this program. Would you mind telling us more about your other account or disclose the account name? OhanaUnitedTalk page 19:33, 14 June 2016 (UTC)

  1. Why do you want to be a Wikipedia Ambassador?
I would like to be a Wikipedia Ambassador to help educators and students achieve their goals and ensure that they are following Wikipedia's standard guidelines.
  2. In three sentences or less, summarize your involvement with Wikimedia projects.
I have been around at Wikipedia for 6 months and mainly focus on content creation, vandalism-fighting, and other minor work. I have edited a few times on WikiVoyage and Wiktionary and understand some of their policies.
  3. Please indicate a few articles to which you have made significant content contributions. (e.g. DYK, GA, FA, major revisions/expansions/copyedits).
A few articles I have contributed to have been two DYKs, ACE Air Cargo Flight 51 and Carson Air Flight 66, and 1 DYK nominee, Conair Aviation Flight 448.
  4. How have you been involved with welcoming and helping new users on Wikipedia?
I have been heavily involved with welcoming and helping new users. I mainly focus my attention on the #wikipedia-en-help chat on IRC and occasionally welcome editors with one of my custom-made Welcome templates.
  5. What do you see as the most important ways we could welcome newcomers or help new users become active contributors?
Some important ways we could welcome newcomers is to be polite and non-technical. Editors are often scared of Wikipedia every time a warning notice or even a caution notice appears on their talk page, and many leave Wikipedia due to complicated policies and standards.
  6. Have you had major conflicts with other editors? Blocks or bans? Involvement in arbitration? Feel free to offer context, if necessary.
At the time of submitting this application, I have not had any major conflicts, blocks or bans, and involvement in arbitration.
  7. How often do you edit Wikipedia and check in on ongoing discussions? Will you be available regularly for at least two hours per week, in your role as a mentor?
I am on Wikipedia for about 3-5 hours daily. Yes, I will available for at least two hours per week.
  8. How would you make sure your students were not violating copyright laws?
To make sure my students were not violating copyright laws, I will first ask my students if they have copy and pasted any text or submitted any pictures. I will then check the copy and pasted text and see if they have paraphrased it or not. For pictures, I would make sure the picture was their own work or used in fair use. This will go for all other copyright areas.
  9. If one of your students had an issue with copyright violation how would you resolve it?
If one of my students had an issue with copyright violation, I would resolve it by giving he or she a lesson and tips about copyright. I will also guide them on how to avoid future copyright violations.
  10. In your _own_ words describe what copyright violation is.
A copyright violation is an occurrence, in which a person is using intellectual property and other material that isn't approved to be made for free use or the standard free use guidelines.

  1. Why do you want to be a Wikipedia Ambassador?
I'd like to be an ambassador because I've found that helping new users is something which I generally enjoy doing on Wikipedia. I would like to encourage and assist educators and students in working to improve Wikimedia projects.
  2. In three sentences or less, summarize your involvement with Wikimedia projects.
I'm most active here, on the English Wikipedia. However, I've also had some experience with Commons, and working with images there. I'm semi-active on the Simple English Wikipedia, mostly reverting vandalism and patrolling new pages. In addition, I'm a member of the small-wiki monitoring team, and often hang out on #cvn-sw on IRC. However, I'm relatively new to cross-wiki countervandalism, and so haven't participated in it much as of yet.
  3. Please indicate a few articles to which you have made significant content contributions. (e.g. DYK, GA, FA, major revisions/expansions/copyedits).
I worked heavily on fried chicken, and recently got it to GA status. I have seven DYK credits: Munin (video game), Banton, Romblon, Rokh (video game), Snail Mail (video game), Mayday! Deep Space, Give It Up! (video game) and Sneaky Sneaky, six of which were created by myself. I also created three articles which are currently good article nominees: Space Marshals, Sneaky Sneaky and Mayday! Deep Space.
  4. How have you been involved with welcoming and helping new users on Wikipedia?
I'm a trainer at the CVUA and am currently training 5 users. You can see my work here. I'm active on the #wikipedia-en-help IRC channel, and have helped numerous new users there. I also occasionally welcome new users and IPs with Twinkle.
  5. What do you see as the most important ways we could welcome newcomers or help new users become active contributors?
We have a lot of policies and guidelines, and many of them are very complicated for new users. I feel that there should be simpler versions of policies to make it easier for inexperienced users to understand. I think that processes such as adoption are very useful for new contributors who are eager to help build an encyclopedia, but many new users never even find this page, so maybe these kinds of links should be easier for new users to find.
  6. Have you had major conflicts with other editors? Blocks or bans? Involvement in arbitration? Feel free to offer context, if necessary.
None that I can think of off the top of my head. I occasionally close and comment on discussions at ANI and I've done a lot of work in contentious areas such as AFD, but I haven't been involved in any large-scale conflicts as of yet.
  7. How often do you edit Wikipedia and check in on ongoing discussions? Will you be available regularly for at least two hours per week, in your role as a mentor?
I generally edit Wikipedia for a few hours a day, although longer on weekends as I have more time for it.
  8. How would you make sure your students were not violating copyright laws?
If I had any concerns that there could possibly be any copied and pasted text in the work of one of my students, I would try asking them if they took anything in their work from anywhere else. If they said no, the duplication detector and Earwig's copyvio detector are two very useful tools for finding copyright violations that I use occasionally, and would check if I still believed that there was a copyright violation.
  9. If one of your students had an issue with copyright violation how would you resolve it?
I would try explaining to them what a copyright violation is, and how to avoid it. I would also inform them of why it's important not to use copyrighted material on Wikipedia (except in some situations listed under fair use, although this requires attribution). I would then link them to some other helpful pages which explain copyrights, most likely WP:COPYVIO, and (if applicable) WP:CLOP.
  10. In your own words describe what copyright violation is.
A copyright violation is the illegal use of any material (including text, images, or other media) which is protected by copyright law.

  1. Why do you want to be a Wikipedia Ambassador?
I wish to contribute more of the free knowledge spreading outside the web, and also to make more and more people (especially in the education sector) to be more aware of the existence of Wikipedia and its useful offline purposes.
  2. In three sentences or less, summarize your involvement with Wikimedia projects.
I've been editing Wikimedia since 2009. I've written more than 1,400 articles & made more than 48,000 edits in Wikipedia, uploaded more than 800 photos (from 12 countries/regions) to Wikimedia Commons, arranged 3 Wikipedia Meetups (1 in Singapore and 2 in Malaysia).
  3. Please indicate a few articles to which you have made significant content contributions. (e.g. DYK, GA, FA, major revisions/expansions/copyedits).
Islam in Taiwan, Agriculture in Taiwan, 2014 Kaohsiung gas explosions, Electricity sector in Taiwan, Electricity sector in Macau, Wang Yu-chi, Wang Jin-pyng, New Taipei City, Kinmen, Matsu Islands, Jiang Yi-huah, 2014 Wang–Zhang meetings, Taiwanese local elections, 2014, Islam in Hong Kong, 2014 in Taiwan, 2015 in Taiwan, Malacca, List of power stations in Taiwan, Taipei Grand Mosque, Eric Chu, Hung Hsiu-chu
  4. How have you been involved with welcoming and helping new users on Wikipedia?
Particularly no, because I've never encounter anyone declaring themselves as new comers. Of course I keep doing improvement to any existing articles in the case of wrong format/style of writing.
  5. What do you see as the most important ways we could welcome newcomers or help new users become active contributors?
A set of guideline for editing/creating/uploading contents to Wikipedia, general overview information on other projects within Wikimedia Foundation (Wikimedia Commons, Wikiquote, Wikivoyage, Wiktionary etc), maybe a list of users for them to communicate in the case of misunderstanding or unknowing how to contribute properly.
  6. Have you had major conflicts with other editors? Blocks or bans? Involvement in arbitration? Feel free to offer context, if necessary.
Quite often. In the case of continuing conflicts, it's better to stay away first (instead of being involved in edit war). Then what I did was to bring the matter into the talk/discussion page of that article, and sometimes involve 2 or 3 other users (in which we know each other already). When there are two parties involved in a dispute, it's better to bring both of them together into a discussion board to find a common consensus. If dispute persisted, then I shall refer to any existing guideline.
  7. How often do you edit Wikipedia and check in on ongoing discussions? Will you be available regularly for at least two hours per week, in your role as a mentor?
At least around 3-4 hours per day and almost everyday. Ongoing discussion it depends on the number of contributors, but in average at least every 2 or 3 days. I'm more than happy to spend more than two hours per week as a mentor.
  8. How would you make sure your students were not violating copyright laws?
Have a proper mentoring first at the beginning prior to their first time editing, followed by monitor them from time to time for any new development they have made (including making comments, corrections, improvements), and of course lastly is to emphasize to them what copyright laws violation is and to keep monitoring on that.
  9. If one of your students had an issue with copyright violation how would you resolve it?
Check the basic writing style, probably he/she forgets to include the reference. If there is a further dispute, then I'll bring it to the discussion board related to any copyright violation/dispute to ask for suggestions/help.
  10. In your _own_ words describe what copyright violation is.
When someone doesn't give due full credit to the writer of the original research/article written.
  11. What else should we know about you that is relevant to being a Wikipedia Ambassador?
The important thing to do is to make Wikipedia contribution as part of our daily life activity (to have a continuous and sustainable support from the volunteers), not just active during university time, but "retired" after university graduation. Maintaining that spirit and momentum of keep sharing knowledge to everyone everyday is the most important part. Keep spreading the Wikipedia words and noble cause, as well as keep recruiting new/young editors to continue the work.

Problem with Article banners (Template:Course assignment)[edit]

There is some kind of problem with Article banners (Template:Course assignment). I was adding them to articles my students edited in Education Program:Hanyang University/Collective Intelligence in Practice: Understanding Wikipedia (Spring 2016) and Education Program:Hanyang University/Sociology of Everyday Life (Spring 2016), but the template is locked at the "Spring 2015" assignment, instead of the correct 2016 ( {{Course assignment | course = Education Program:Hanyang University/Collective Intelligence in Practice: Understanding Wikipedia (Spring 2016) | term = Spring 2015}}). The course seems properly defined for 2016, and the only place 2015 appears in the page is in template. This can be adjusted manually, of course, on article's talk pages, but overall seems like a bug someone should look into (if you reply here, please WP:ECHO me back, thank you). --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 05:50, 22 June 2016 (UTC)
