This year, Canada is stepping up to support other countries in the development of open government. Canada began its leadership role in the Open Government Partnership in October 2018. Open Government has always been a collaboration between citizens and governments. I look forward to working with our civil society co-chair, Nathaniel Heller. Together we will work to make important open government advancements around the world. Through our efforts, we will support governments in becoming more inclusive, especially for marginalized communities. We’ll empower under-represented citizens, regardless of gender, race or sexual orientation, to become more involved in their governments. We’ll also work on expanding citizen participation – by establishing and supporting international partnerships to protect and expand civic space. And we will focus on openly sharing the results of our work. We will collect and share data and stories about the everyday impact of open government. More open and digital governments are the key to improving the relationships between citizens and government, and rebuilding democratic legitimacy in the 21st century. Canada is proud to be taking a leadership role as part of the partnership, and we look forward to hosting members as we work to make Open Government more inclusive, participatory and truly impactful.
