Accessibility

The House of Commons supports and promotes the participation of all citizens in parliamentary democracy, in particular when they access information through its website, visit the House of Commons, or participate in parliamentary business.

As part of its core value of inclusion, the House of Commons Administration is committed to attaining the highest level of accessibility possible.

Web Accessibility

Statement

For our website, our goal is to meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 at the AA level. The WCAG 2.0 states: "Following these guidelines will make content accessible to a wider range of people with disabilities, including blindness and low vision, deafness and hearing loss, learning disabilities, cognitive limitations, limited movement, speech disabilities, photosensitivity and combinations of these. Following these guidelines will also often make your Web content more usable to users in general."

The House of Commons website reflects the collective memory of the institution and serves as a hub to enable Canadians to keep informed and get involved in our parliamentary democracy. The ourcommons.ca website draws information from many authors and applications which may result in not always meeting the level of accessibility that we strive to achieve. For example, we cannot guarantee the accessibility of documents or publications provided by third parties. Please contact us if you require documents or publications in an accessible format and we will work with you to make it available. We also welcome feedback regarding any accessibility issues you may encounter so that we may respond to your concerns and improve our website.

Improving Your Browsing Experience

The House undertakes periodic testing of a representative sampling of its website against Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 at the AA level. We then prioritize, plan and remedy issues. This process ensures we monitor and measure our progress towards an improved experience. The House of Commons also tests PDF documents for accessibility, especially when PDF is the sole format available.

To further improve your browsing experience on our site, we recommend applying the W3C Web Accessibility Initiative’s (WAI) Tips for Customizing Your Computer available at http://www.w3.org/WAI/users/browsing (English only).
