Get certified true copies of a travel document

A certified true copy of a Canadian travel document, which includes passports, is a reproduction of part of your travel document that’s been:

  • validated by an officer against the electronic passport record
  • certified as a true and authentic copy of the original
  • dated
  • sealed by the Passport Program

A certified true copy cannot include a copy of a visa or stamp in your passport or travel document.

How do I get certified true copies of my passport or travel document?

To get certified true copies of your Canadian passport or travel document:

  1. Complete Request for certified true copy of Canadian travel document [PPTC 516] (PDF, 52.47 KB)
  2. Submit the completed form to a Passport Office or a Government of Canada office abroad along with the passport or travel document to be certified. Make sure your passport or travel document is signed
  3. Pay the fee

When to get a certified true copy

Some organizations may ask you for a certified true copy of your Canadian passport or travel document.

You can ask for a certified true copy of your passport or travel document at any time. This means you can ask for a certified true copy when you’re applying for a new passport or travel document. You’ll receive your certified true copy along with your new passport or travel document.

If your signature is required

Some organizations need certified true copies to show that you’ve signed your passport or travel document. If you aren’t sure if the certified true copies need to show that your documents are signed, contact the organization to find out.

If your signature is needed and you are applying for a new passport or travel document, don’t ask for a certified true copy when you apply. Wait to get the passport or travel document, sign it, and then apply for a certified true copy. For more information, contact the Passport Program.
