After a viral thread was posted to Twitter on Tuesday revealing a series of racist and xenophobic language she had used in the past, pop star Camila Cabello formally apologized to her fans.

The posts came from Cabello’s old Tumblr page, which has since been deleted and where she had reblogged countless racist images and gifs, one mocking domestic violence, and others using racist slurs. The posts date back to 2012 and 2013, when the singer was 15 years old.

Cabello has been accused of using language like this numerous times over the last few years. In 2018, she was accused of using the N-word in reference to her former Fifth Harmony band member Normani when private messages from her phone were allegedly leaked.

In a statement posted to her Twitter on Thursday, Cabello said, “When I was younger, I used language that I’m deeply ashamed of and will regret forever. I was uneducated and ignorant and once I became aware of the history and the weight and the true meaning behind this horrible and hurtful language, I was deeply embarrassed I ever used it. I apologize then and I apologize again now. I would never intentionally hurt anyone and I regret it from the bottom of my heart.“

She added, “I’m 22 now, I’m an adult and I’ve grown and learned and am conscious and aware of the history and the pain it carries in a way I wasn’t before. … The truth is I was embarrassingly ignorant and unaware.”

Cabello’s apology comes one week since the release of her latest album, Romance.
