  1. Find out if you need a through-freight permit

    With a through-freight permit you can:

    • temporarily register your commercial vehicle in Yukon; and
    • haul or escort goods only through Yukon.

    This permit is issued when:

    • there can be no loading or unloading of goods within Yukon;
    • your commercial vehicle:
      • does not have a valid Yukon vehicle registration; and
      • you are transporting goods through Yukon; or
    • your escort vehicle:
      • does not have a valid Yukon vehicle registration; and
      • you are escorting a load through Yukon.
  2. How to apply

    You must call ahead with all information about weights and dimensions and ask for a travel number. Analysis might be required, which will take at least 3 business days to prepare, and depends on:

    • load weight; and
    • dimensions.

    You can get a through-freight permit at the Whitehorse or Watson Lake weigh station. A permit can be issued at a roadside inspection site weigh station.

    When you apply for a through-freight permit, you need to provide the following information before the permit can be issued:

    • copy of valid vehicle insurance;
    • copy of valid vehicle registration; and
    • valid driver’s licence.

    In some cases you will need to provide the following. The carrier compliance officer will let you know if these are needed:

    • lease agreement;
    • copy of bill of lading;
    • copy of valid vehicle ownership such as a bill of sale; and
    • if you are carrying dangerous goods you need a current Dangerous Goods Training Certificate.

    What is the fee?

    • This permit is only valid for a 1-way trip.
    • The fee is $60.
