  1. Know the classes of insurance that insurers can offer in Yukon

    All insurers doing business in Yukon must hold a Yukon licence.

    We accept new insurer applications on an ongoing basis. You must renew your licence every year. All insurer licences expire annually on June 30. In Yukon, an insurer can obtain a licence for the following classes of insurance:

    • accident;
    • aircraft;
    • automobile;
    • boiler & machinery;
    • credit;
    • disability;
    • employers’ liability;
    • fidelity;
    • guarantee;
    • hail;
    • legal expense;
    • liability;
    • life;
    • marine;
    • mortgage;
    • public liability;
    • property;
    • sickness;
    • surety; and
    • title.

     

  2. Complete the application form

    You must complete the Canadian Council of Insurance Regulators (CCIR) licence application form and appendices to apply for an insurer’s licence in Yukon. These forms are available on the CCIR website.

  3. Pay your fees

    Fees

    All insurers must pay a $5 recording and filing fee.

    You must also pay the following fees for each class of licence you apply for.

    Joint stock and mutual companies

    Annual licence fees:

    • life: $300;
    • property: $150;
    • accident: $150;
    • other: $50.

    Mutual benefit and fraternal societies

    Annual licence fees:

    • life: $50;
    • accident or sickness: $50.

    How to pay

    You can pay by:

    • cheque;
    • credit card;
    • cash; or
    • debit.

    Cheque

    • Complete the payment information form.
    • Provide a cheque in the appropriate amount made out to the Government of Yukon.
    • After we issue your licence, we'll cash your cheque.

    Credit card

    • Complete the payment information form.
    • If you submit your application in person, by courier or mail, you may include your credit card info on your payment information form.
    • If you submit your application by email or fax, do not include your credit card information on your form. We'll contact you for your credit card info.
    • After we issue your licence, we'll take payment.

    Cash or debit

    • You can only pay by cash or debit if you can pay in person at our office in Whitehorse.
    • Complete the payment information form.
    • We'll hold your licence at our office after we issue it.
    • We'll take payment by cash or debit when you pick it up.
  4. Submit your application, appendices and fees

    Prepare your application package

    Your complete application package must include:

    • your completed application form;
    • all supporting documents; and
    • your payment form.

    We typically process applications within 10 business days. We'll confirm you've met all legal requirements before issuing a licence. We may return your application if you’ve not provided all the required documentation.
