The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology launched in September, 2016, and is a monthly journal of original research, review, opinion, and news covering international issues relevant to gastroenterologists and hepatologists worldwide.

The journal publishes papers that reflect the rich variety of ongoing clinical research in gastroenterology and hepatology, in particular (but not limited to) in the areas of inflammatory bowel diseases, NAFLD and NASH, functional gastrointestinal disorders, digestive cancers, and viral hepatitis.

As with other journals in the Lancet family, The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology offers a fast-track publication process in which papers can be published online within 4–8 weeks from submission. The journal is indexed/abstracted in MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, and in the Journal Citation ReportsTM.

Information for Authors

The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology publishes interesting and informative reviews on any topic connected with gastroenterology or hepatology, and considers any original research contribution that advocates change in, or illuminates, clinical practice in these areas. Manuscripts must be solely the work of the author(s) stated, must not have been previously published elsewhere, and must not be under consideration by another journal. All papers should be written to be clearly understandable to the journal’s readers in a wide range of specialties and countries.

The journal publishes a range of article types that encompass all aspects of gastroenterology and hepatology medicine: Comment, Correspondence, News, Article, Review, Health Policy, Viewpoint, and Clinical Picture.

All original research judged eligible for consideration by the journal’s editors will be peer-reviewed within 72 h and, if accepted, published within 8 weeks from submission. All accepted Articles will be published online first before appearing in the print journal.

The Lancet journals are signatories of the Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals, issued by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE Recommendations) and to the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) code of conduct for editors. We follow COPE's guidelines.

About our content

We publish papers relating to primary and secondary prevention, diagnosis, management, and treatment of any disease or disorder of the alimentary tract, liver, gallbladder, biliary tree, and exocrine pancreas and their complications. In addition, the journal continues The Lancet’s tradition of advocacy and health policy and aims to catalyse alliances between health-care professionals, the public, and policy makers to champion change based on the best evidence to deliver better health worldwide.

About the Editorial team

Rob Brierley, Editor-in-Chief

I studied molecular and cellular biochemistry and clinical pharmacology at the University of Oxford, and clinical oncology at the University of Birmingham. After graduation, I was a technical editor for the Journal of Molecular Biology, and worked on a series of viral hepatitis textbooks, before joining The Lancet group in 2004. After positions at The Lancet Infectious Diseases and The Lancet, I joined The Lancet Oncology in 2008, becoming Deputy Editor in 2012, before launching The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology in 2016. My interests include gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary cancers, viral hepatitis, and inflammatory bowel diseases.

Hugh Thomas
Hugh Thomas, Deputy Editor

I studied medical genetics at Swansea University, and the developmental origins of metabolic disease at the University of Southampton. In 2015 I joined Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology as an assistant editor, becoming associate editor in 2016 and senior editor in 2018. After a year working as a medical writer, I joined The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology as Deputy Editor in 2020. My interests include MAFLD, inflammatory bowel diseases, and public health.

Sheila Pinion, Senior Editor

I studied biomedical sciences at Royal Holloway, University of London, and stem cells and regeneration at the University of Bristol. I joined The Lancet group in 2016 as an Assistant Editor, most recently working on secondment as acting Senior Editor at The Lancet Oncology and The Lancet Respiratory Medicine. I joined The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology as Senior Editor in 2019.
