By continent

As a result of COVID-19 many regions have imposed lockdowns, curfews and quarantines alongside new legislation and evacuations, or other restrictions for citizens of or recent travelers to the most affected areas.[358] Other regions have imposed global restrictions that apply to all foreign countries and territories, or prevent their own citizens from travelling overseas.[359]

Africa

  1,000–9,999 confirmed cases
  10,000–99,999 confirmed cases
  100,000+ confirmed cases

The pandemic was confirmed to have spread to Africa on 14 February 2020, with the first confirmed case announced in Egypt.[360][361] The first confirmed case in sub-Saharan Africa was announced in Nigeria at the end of February.[362] Within three months, the virus had spread throughout the continent, as Lesotho, the last African sovereign state to have remained free of the virus, reported a case on 13 May.[363][364] By 26 May, it appeared that most African countries were experiencing community transmission, although testing capacity was limited.[365] Most of the identified imported cases arrived from Europe and the United States rather than from China where the virus originated.[366] It is believed that there is widespread under-reporting in many African countries with less developed healthcare systems.[367]

Experts have worried about COVID-19 spreading to Africa, because many of the healthcare systems on the continent are inadequate, having problems such as lack of equipment, lack of funding, insufficient training of healthcare workers, and inefficient data transmission. It was feared that the pandemic could be difficult to keep under control in Africa, and could cause huge economic problems if it spread widely.[368][366] As of April 18, 2020, the supply of ventilators was low in much of Africa: 41 countries had only 2,000 ventilators between them, and ten countries had no ventilators at all. Even basic supplies like soap and water are subject to shortages in parts of the continent.[369]

  Suspected cases reported

The COVID-19 pandemic began in Asia in Wuhan, Hubei, China, and has spread widely through the continent. As of 30 April 2020,[370] at least one case of COVID-19 had been reported in every country in Asia except North Korea and Turkmenistan.

Asian countries with the highest numbers of confirmed coronavirus cases are India, Iran, Turkey, Iraq, and Indonesia.[371] Among the earliest countries to report COVID-19 cases after the outbreak in China were Thailand, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam, but these countries had successfully controlled the pandemic. The highest numbers of deaths are recorded in India, Iran, Indonesia, Iraq and Turkey with more than 150,000 deaths combined. The death tolls in a number of countries, however, are claimed to be significantly higher than those given in official figures.[372][373]

Europe

Cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 residents in Europe;Vatican not shown due to lack of data

As of 13 March 2020, when the number of new cases became greater than those in China, the World Health Organization (WHO) began to consider Europe the active centre of the pandemic.[374][375] Cases by country across Europe had doubled over periods of typically 3 to 4 days, with some countries (mostly those at earlier stages of detection) showing doubling every 2 days.[376]

As of 17 March, all countries within Europe had a confirmed case of COVID-19, with Montenegro being the last European country to report at least one case.[377] At least one death has been reported in all European countries, apart from the Vatican City.

North America

  1–499 confirmed cases
  500–999
  1,000–1,999
  2,000–4,999
  5,000–9,999

  50,000–99,999
  100,000–199,999
  200,000+ confirmed cases

The first cases in North America were reported in the United States in January 2020. Cases were reported in all North American countries after Saint Kitts and Nevis confirmed a case on 25 March, and in all North American territories after Bonaire confirmed a case on 16 April.[378]

On 26 March 2020, the U.S. became the country with the highest number of confirmed COVID-19 infections, with over 82,000 cases.[379] On 11 April 2020, the U.S. became the country with the highest official death toll for COVID-19, with over 20,000 deaths.[380] As of 21 November 2020 the total cases of COVID-19 are over 13,942,964 with over 383,084 total deaths.[381]

Canada reported 117,658 cases and 3,842 deaths on 30 July, while Mexico reported 416,179 cases and 46,000 deaths.[382] The most cases by state is Texas with about 17,279 deaths and over 849,000 confirmed cases.

Oceania

  1–9 confirmed cases
  10–99 confirmed cases
  100–999 confirmed cases
  1000–9999 confirmed cases
  10,000+ confirmed cases
The pandemic was confirmed to have reached Oceania on 25 January 2020 with the first confirmed case reported in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.[383] It has since spread elsewhere in the region,[384] although many small Pacific island nations have thus far avoided the outbreak by closing their international borders. Six Oceania sovereign states have yet to report a case: Kiribati, the Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Tonga, and Tuvalu. Australia and New Zealand have been praised for their handling of the pandemic compared to other western nations, with the latter wiping out all community transmission of the virus. The most recent country or territory to report its first confirmed case was Samoa, on 18 November 2020.

South America

  no confirmed cases
  1–49 confirmed cases
  50–99 confirmed cases
  100–249 confirmed cases
  250–499 confirmed cases
  500–999 confirmed cases
  1000+ confirmed cases

The pandemic was confirmed to have reached South America on 26 February 2020 when Brazil confirmed a case in São Paulo.[385] By 3 April, all countries and territories in South America had recorded at least one case.[386]

On 13 May, it was reported that Latin America and the Caribbean had reported over 400,000 cases of infection with 23,091 deaths. On 22 May, citing especially the rapid increase of infections in Brazil, the WHO declared South America the epicentre of the pandemic.[387][388]

As of 20 September,[needs update] South America has about 7.5 million confirmed cases and 238,000 deaths. Due to a dearth of testing and medical facilities, it is believed that the outbreak is far larger than the official numbers show.[389]

Antarctica

Antarctica is the only continent with no confirmed cases of COVID-19 amid the COVID-19 pandemic,[390][391][392] but human activity in Antarctica has nonetheless been indirectly impacted.

At sea

The COVID-19 pandemic spread to a number of cruise ships, with the nature of such ships—including crowded semi-enclosed areas, increased exposure to new environments, and limited medical resources—contributing to the heightened risk and rapid spread of the disease.[393]

The British-registered Diamond Princess was the first cruise ship to have a major outbreak on board, with the ship quarantined at Yokohama from 4 February 2020 for approximately one month. Over 700 people became infected, and 14 people died. At the time, the ship accounted for over half the reported cases of SARS-CoV-2 outside of mainland China.[394]

The COVID-19 pandemic spread to many military ships. The nature of these ships, which includes working with others in small enclosed areas and a lack of private quarters for the vast majority of crew, contributed to the rapid spread of the disease, even more so than on cruise ships.[395][396]

Due to the nature of operations security, national militaries may have policies in place that prevent or restrict reporting of SARS-CoV-2 infections and COVID-19 deaths, so although the cases listed below may have been widely reported in reliable sources, confirmation by official spokespeople of the respective militaries is not systematic.[397]
