Last: Belly up to the home-grown bar

The well-stocked bar; it’s the sort of thing that many of us aspire to maintain but it’s one of those things that typically go sideways. If you’re like me, your liquor cabinet is a collection of almost-empty bottles that have been open for way too long (gin and bourbon aside in my case), unless you entertain like Hugh Hefner at the height of his bacchanalian party era, which if I recall lasted about five decades. For a start, I would recommend tossing those heels of bottles that have been open since the ’90s. Six to eight months is the recommended consumption window for most spirits after being opened unless the bottles are mostly full. Alcohol evaporates so the more space in the bottle, the quicker the flavour profile will deteriorate. They will be safe to drink but that’s about it.
