  • The number of deaths registered in England in the week ending 21 October 2022 (Week 42) was 11,202; this was 17.2% above the five-year average (1,646 excess deaths).

  • The number of deaths registered in Wales in the week ending 21 October 2022 (Week 42) was 714; this was 10.0% above the five-year average (65 excess deaths).

  • Of the deaths registered in Week 42 in England and Wales, 687 mentioned “novel coronavirus (COVID-19)”, accounting for 5.8% of all deaths; this was 122 more deaths, with “novel coronavirus (COVID-19)” mentioned, compared with the previous week.

  • Of the deaths registered in Week 42 in England, 647 mentioned “novel coronavirus (COVID-19)”, accounting for 5.8% of all deaths; in Wales, 40 deaths mentioned “novel coronavirus (COVID-19)”, accounting for 5.6% of all deaths.

  • Of the 687 deaths involving COVID-19 in England and Wales in Week 42, 68.3% (469 deaths) had this recorded as the underlying cause of death, an increase from 66.2% in Week 41.

  • Using the most up-to-date data we have available, the number of deaths from the week ending 13 March 2020 to the week ending 21 October 2022 was 1,542,974 in England and Wales; of these, 1,445,745 were recorded in England and 94,890 were recorded in Wales.
