This article documents the timeline of transmission of COVID-19 during the COVID-19 pandemic in New Zealand throughout 2021. The following dates and times are in New Zealand Daylight Time (UTC+13) until 3 April and New Zealand Standard Time (UTC+12) from 4 April.

On 14 February 2021, at 11:59 pm, Auckland moved up to alert level 3 and the rest of New Zealand to level 2 after new community cases were detected in Auckland during level 1.[1] On 17 February at 11:59 pm, Auckland moved down to level 2 and the rest of the country to level 1.[2] On 22 February at 11:59 pm, Auckland moved down to level 1.[3] On 28 February at 6:00 am, Auckland moved back up to level 3 while the rest of New Zealand moved to level 2.[4] On 7 March at 6:00 am, Auckland moved back to level 2 while the rest of New Zealand moved to level 1.[5] On 12 March, Auckland moved back to level 1 at midday.[6]

Transmission timeline[edit]

Data about the previous day is extracted from the Institute of Environmental Science and Research's database at 9:00 am daily and is publicly released by the Ministry of Health around 1:00 pm. For most of January, data was released every three days instead.

  • The Ministry of Health provides updates on case figures daily. Previously, from 10 December 2020–24 January 2021 and from 17–22 March 2021, updates were provided several days a week.[10][11] In 2021, no updates were provided on 6 February (Waitangi Day), on 2, 3 and 5 April (Easter holiday), on 17 April, on 26 April (Anzac Day), or on 1 May.

January 2021[edit]

On 3 January, 19 new cases were reported in managed isolation, bringing the total number to 2,181 (1,825 confirmed and 356 probable). Two have recovered, bringing the total number of recovered to 2,084. The death toll remains 25. There are 72 cases, all in managed isolation.[12] Six of the new cases had the mutant B.1.1.7 strain that originated in the United Kingdom.[13]

On 5 January, five new cases were reported, bringing the total number to 2,186 (1,830 confirmed and 356 probable). There are 16 new recoveries, bringing the total number of recovered to 2,100. The death toll remains 25. There are 61 active cases in managed isolation.[14]

On 6 January, a managed isolation worker with symptoms sparked a COVID-19 lockdown at the Hamilton District Court. The lockdown was lifted following two hours after the Ministry of Health confirmed that the worker had returned a negative test.[15]

On 7 January, four new cases were reported, bringing the total number to 2,188 (1,832 confirmed and 356 probable). One person has recovered, bringing the total number of recovered to 2,101. The death toll remains 25. There are 62 active cases in managed isolation.[16] Two of these new cases were linked to the British B.1.1.7 strain.[17]

On 10 January, 31 cases were reported in managed isolation, bringing the total number to 2,219 (1,863 confirmed and 356 probable). 18 people have recovered, bringing the total number of recovered to 2,119. The death toll remains 25. There are 75 active cases.[18] 19 of these new cases had the B.1.1.7 strain from the United Kingdom, via the United Arab Emirates, Qatar or Singapore. In addition, New Zealand reported its first case of the South African 501.V2 variant. Eleven of the new cases were from a group of international mariners that arrived on 6 January.[19]

On 11 January, four cases were reported in managed isolation, bringing the total number to 2,222 (1,866 confirmed and 356 probable). 1 person has recovered, bringing the total number of recovered to 2,120. The death toll remains 25. There are 77 active cases, with one previously reported case being reassessed as not a case.[20]

On 13 January, six new cases were reported, bringing the total number to 2,228 (1,872 confirmed and 356 probable). 21 people have recovered, bringing the total number of recovered to 2,141. The death toll remains 25. There are 62 cases in managed isolation.[21]

On 15 January, 18 new cases were reported, bringing the total number to 2,246 (1,890 confirmed and 356 probable). Four people have recovered, bringing the total number of recovered to 2,145. The death toll remains 25. There are 78 cases in managed isolation.[22] Two of the new 18 cases are historical while the others come from several countries including South Africa, the United Kingdom, the United States, Bahrain, Russia, the United Arab Emirates, Italy, India and Malaysia.[23]

On 17 January, 10 new cases were reported, bringing the total to 2,256 (1,900 confirmed and 356 probable). Four have recovered, bringing the total number of recovered to 2,149. The death toll remains 25. There are 82 active cases in managed isolation.[24]

On 18 January, six new cases were reported, bringing the total number to 2,262 (1,906 confirmed and 356 probable). There are three new recoveries, bringing the total number of recovered to 2,152. The death toll remains 25. There are 85 active cases in managed isolation.[25]

On 20 January, six new cases were reported, bringing the total number to 2,267 (1,911 confirmed and 356 probable). There are 14 recoveries, bringing the total number of recovered to 2,166. The death toll remains 25. There are 76 active cases all in managed isolation.[26]

On 22 January, nine new cases were reported, bringing the total number of case of to 2,276 (1,920 confirmed and 356 probable). There are 12 recoveries, bringing the total number of recovered to 2,178. The death toll remains 25. There are 73 cases all in managed isolation.[27]

On 24 January, eight new cases were reported at the border, bringing the total number of case of to 2,284 (1,928 confirmed and 356 probable), and one recovery was reported, bringing the total number to 2,179, with 79 active cases.[28] That same day, a new probable case in the community was reported in Northland. The individual had previously been through an Auckland quarantine facility.[29] Later that night, the Director-General Ashley Bloomfield confirmed that the probable case in Northland was the country's first community transmission in two months.[30] The individual was a 56-year-old woman who had returned from Europe and had completed a 14-day stay in managed isolation at Auckland's Pullman Hotel on 13 January.[31]

On 25 January, six new cases were reported, bringing the total number to 2,228 (1,932 confirmed and 356 probable). There are 20 recoveries, bringing the total number of recovered to 2,199. The death toll remains 25. There are 64 active cases.[32] That same day, the Director-General Bloomfield confirmed that the Northland community transmission patient had contracted the South African strain Lineage B.1.1.248. That same day, the Health Ministry released a list of 28 businesses in Auckland and Northland that the patient had visited in the period between 14 and 22 January. Health authorities also identified 15 close contacts of the patient including her husband and a hairdresser who tested negative.[33]

The new case involves a person who arrived from the United States on January 28. In addition, all close contacts of the border-related cases have tested negative.[41]

On 3 February, three cases (two in managed isolation and one historical case) were reported, bringing the total number to 2,308 (1,952 confirmed and 356 probable). 12 have recovered, bringing the total number of recoveries to 2,222. The death toll remains 25. There are 61 active cases (59 in managed isolation and two in the community).[45]

On 4 February, six new cases were reported, bringing the total number to 2,313 (1,957 confirmed and 356 probable). One previously confirmed case was reclassified as under investigation. Six have recovered, bringing the total number of recoveries to 2,228. The death toll remains 25. There are 60 active cases (58 in managed isolation and two in the community).[46]

On 6 February, one new community transmission was reported in Hamilton, which was linked to the Pullman Hotel in Auckland. Director of Public Health Dr Caroline McElnay described the case as a recently returned asymptomatic case who had left the Pullman Hotel on 30 January.[48]

On 7 February, five new cases were reported, bringing the total number to 2,320 (1,964 confirmed and 356 probable). One person has recovered, bringing the total number of recovered to 2,229. There are 66 active cases (62 at the border and four community transmissions).[49] Two of the new cases originated from travel from Zambia and the United Arab Emirates. In addition, health authorities confirmed the Hamilton community transmission as the fifth community case reported in 2021.[50]

On 13 February, two new cases were reported, bringing the total number to 2,328 (1,972 confirmed and 356 probable). There was one new recovery, bringing the total number of recoveries to 2,258. There are 45 active cases, with 44 in managed isolation and one in the community.[56] That same day, the Health Ministry confirmed the death of a returning COVID-19 patient, who had died of a non-COVID-19 related illness at North Shore Hospital on 5 February. This patient was not included in the COVID-19 official death toll.[57]

On 14 February, three new community transmission were reported, bringing the total number to 2,330 (1,974 confirmed and 356 probable). The number of recovered remains 2,258 while the death toll remains 25. There are 44 active cases, with 44 in managed isolation and three in the community.[58] That same day, COVID-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins identified the three community cases as three members of family (a mother, father, and daughter) from Papatoetoe, South Auckland. The mother worked at the airline catering service LSG Sky Chefs while the father worked as a tradesperson. The daughter was a Year 9 student at Papatoetoe High School. Two of the confirmed cases had visited New Plymouth on 6–7 February and also visited Pak'nSave supermarket chain's Manukau branch. The family was moved to Jetpark managed isolation and quarantine facility. Papatoetoe High School principal Vaughan Couillaut announced that the school will close on Monday and Tuesday. Five teachers and 28 students at the school were identified as close contacts of the infected student while all other students and staff at the school were considered "casual" contacts.[59]

On 15 February, six cases were reported in managed isolation, bringing the total number to 2,336 (1,980 confirmed and 356 probable). The third community case worked at the McDonald's restaurant in Cavendish Drive. That same day, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced that Auckland's Level 3 lockdown would end at midnight since the minimal number of new community cases and wastewater testing suggested that the new community tranmission was not "widespread." The rest of the country would go into Level 1.[63][64] That same day, a sixth community case was reported with the individual being in the same household as the two siblings announced earlier today.[65]

The death toll remains 26. There are 46 active cases, with 40 in managed isolation and six in the community.[66]

As a result, the Government placed Auckland under an Alert Level 3 lockdown for the next seven days, with the rest of the country going back to Alert Level 2.[78]

At the time, the frigate was undergoing a major upgrade in Canada. The ship's crew and their families were staying at an accommodation block near the Royal Canadian Navy's base at Esquimalt.[133]
