Riding the school bus: COVID-19

School bus services for the 2020–21 school year have been adapted based on the health and safety guidelines for school bus operations set by Yukon’s Chief Medical Officer of Health.

The health and safety guidelines for school bus operations were last updated on December 16, 2020. 

The most current health and safety information is below. 

Non-medical mask

Yukon’s Chief Medical Officer of Health requires non-medical mask use starting January 4, 2021 by:

  • bus drivers; and 
  • children 5 years and older.

Other health and safety measures

Other health and safety measures on the bus include:

  • supporting physical distancing by:
    • loading students on the bus from back to front;
    • offloading students from front to back;
    • seating students at a 2-metres (6-feet) distance from school bus drivers;
    • limiting students to 2 per seat if they are in high school;
    • limiting students to 3 per seat if they are in elementary school or they’re from the same household; and
    • assigning seating when appropriate. 
  • students and bus drivers stay home when they're sick;
  • ensuring students and bus drivers are washing or sanitizing their hands:
    • before; and
    • after boarding the school bus; and
  • cleaning and disinfecting buses after each trip, including high-touch areas.
