COVID-19 vaccination in Japan is among the last major economies to begin COVID-19 vaccination.[2]

Despite a sustained COVID-19 pandemic in Japan, Japan is frequently mentioned as "slow" for vaccination after April 2021, before the upcoming 2020 Summer Olympics.[3][4]

Background[edit]

On 14 February 2021, Pfizer was approved by the government of Japan,[5] and expected rollout on 17 February 2021.[6] On 28 May 2021, Pfizer approved by the Japanese health ministry panel for the expansion of adolescents 12-15 years old.[7]

On 20 May 2021, Moderna and Astrazeneca were approved by the government of Japan.[8]

History[edit]

In April 2021, prime minister Suga Yoshihide and Pfizer CEO discuss, and promise Japan will receive 50mil.[2] [21] At the time, Suga Yoshihide is tripping in the United States after meeting Joe Biden.

The roll out of the vaccines in Japan with 4 percent of the population inoculated as of May 21, 2021, and as led to criticisms on slow approval, disruptions on import and the lack of medical professionals.[22][23] A poll conducted in April showed that more than 60 percent of people were dissatisfied with Japan’s vaccine rollout, as experts say that "it is too late now to stop the spread of variants with vaccines".[24]
