It can be difficult to choose a heating system. Each system has different:

• fuel costs;
• efficiencies; and
• fuel-storage requirements.

  
If you change your heating system, you may have to:

• replace an oil tank;
• rent propane tanks;
• cut and store firewood; or
• upgrade your electrical panel, or transmission line.

Eligible systems

• An air-source heat pump listed by Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnership as ‘cold climate.’
• A ducted system must have a Region IV (Canada) heating season performance factor (HSPF) equal to, or greater than, 9 and a coefficient of performance (COP) at -15° Celsius equal to, or greater than, 1.75.
• A non-ducted system,  also known as a minisplit, must have a Region IV (Canada) heating season performance factor (HSPF) equal to or greater than 10 and a coefficient of performance (COP) at -15° Celsius equal to or greater than 1.75. 
• A ground-source heat pump that's ENERGY STAR® certified.
• Systems must be installed in an existing home.

Rebate amount

• 40% of project costs up to a maximum of $8,000

Find out if you need to upgrade your electrical system

1. Get an electrician to confirm if there is sufficient space on your home’s electrical panel and service line to add a heat pump.
2. Call your utility (ATCO Electric Yukon or Yukon Energy Corporation) to determine if a service upgrade is required.
3. Get a qualified electrician to complete the installation and get a copy of the electrical inspection report.

Other rebates available for installing heat pumps

You can also get a rebate for installing heat pumps in:

• new homes under 5 years old; or
• new or existing commercial, institutional, and multi-unit residential buildings.

Benefits of heat pumps

Heat pumps extract heat from outside and push it into a building.

• Air-source heat pumps extract heat from even very cold air.
• Ground-source heat pumps extract heat from underground.

Heat pumps are powered by electricity and use less electricity to heat the same space as electric baseboard heaters.

This means they:

• are significantly cheaper to operate;
• reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and
• reduce dependence on imported heating fuels.

Heat pumps are a proven technology that works in Yukon’s cold climate down to -25° Celsius.

All heat pumps are paired with electric or conventional back-up heating systems that provide supplemental heating on the coldest days.

Heat pumps are available in a variety of options and sizes and can be integrated with existing heating systems.

Get a loan to upgrade or repair your home

Yukon Housing Corporation offers a loan for homeowners who upgrade or repair their home. The home repair loan is up to $70,000 and amortized up to 15 years in 5-year terms.

Canada Greener Homes Grant

Get additional funding from the Government of Canada. Your new heat pump may qualify under the Canada Greener Home Grant. To qualify, you must:

• register with the federal government; and
• get an energy assessment before you install the heat pump.

Wood is a traditional and carbon-neutral heating solution in Yukon.

Eligibility

Eligible wood heating systems include:

• boilers;
• cordwood stoves;
• fireplace inserts;
• furnaces; and
• pellet stoves.

Wood heating systems must:

• be EPA-listed;
• meet EPA New Source Performance Standards; or
• CSA B415.10; and
• have a maximum particulate matter emission ratings not exceeding:
  • 2.5 grams per hour for cord wood stoves, pellet stoves, and fireplace inserts;
  • 0.1 pounds per 1,000 British thermal units for wood boilers; 0.15 pounds per 1,000 British thermal units if tested using cord wood; or
  • 0.15 pounds per 1,000 British thermal units for wood furnaces.

Rebate amount

• $800 for furnaces or boilers (hydronic heaters).
• $600 for pellet stoves.
• $300 for cord wood stoves.

Furnaces and boilers must be:

• Equal or greater than 95% annual fuel utilization efficiency; and
• ENERGY STAR certified.

Combination systems must be:

• condensing; and
• CSA P.9 tested.

Rebate amount

• $500 for oil or propane furnace and boilers.
