The Battle of Berdiansk was a military engagement between the Russian Armed Forces and the Armed Forces of Ukraine during the Southern Ukraine offensive in the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. Russian forces from the south front on their way to aid in the Siege of Mariupol captured the port city of Berdiansk.

Background[edit]

After Russian forces captured Melitopol, they moved northeast towards Tokmak, which they put under siege, and east towards Berdiansk on the way to Mariupol, which is being attacked by Russian forces moving from Donetsk People's Republic, as part of the Eastern Ukraine offensive.

Battle[edit]

On 26 February, Russian troops captured the Port of Berdiansk and the Berdiansk Airport.[3][4]

On 27 February, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that it had surrounded Berdiansk.[5] Later that evening, around 18:00, it was reported that Russian soldiers had entered the city.[6] Around 22:00, Oleksandr Svidlo, the mayor of Berdiansk, announced that Russian forces had taken control of all administrative buildings.[7] Russian Buk missile systems were also spotted in Berdiansk.[6]

On 28 February, the Zaporizhzhia Regional State Administration reported that Russian troops gained control of Berdiansk and the city's police department was disbanded, with city authorities allegedly refusing to collaborate with the Russians.[1][2] The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that Russian troops had taken the city.[8] During the battle, local authorities reported that one person was killed and another was wounded.[1][2]

Aftermath[edit]

According to Svidlo, Russian forces left the city on 28 February, but a Russian military police detachment remained in the city.[9] Russian forces moved towards Mariupol to join the Eastern offensive and encircle the city.[10] By reaching Mariupol, the forces from the Kherson offensive established a land connection linking Crimea and the Donetsk People's Republic.[11]

It was also reported that Russia had captured at least eight Ukrainian warships in the aftermath of the battle; a Polnocny-class landing ship, a Ondatra-class landing craft, a Grisha-class corvette, a Matka-class missile boat, two Gyurza-M-class artillery boats, a Zhuk-class patrol boat, a Yevgenya-class minesweeper, and a Sorum-class tugboat.[12]

It was reported on 14 March that Russian amphibious warships had arrived at port in Berdiansk; a Raptor-class patrol boat was seen among the numerous ships.[13] On 21 March, the governor of Zaporizhzhia Oblast, Oleksandr Starukh, alleged that Russian forces had seized five ships containing several thousand tons of grain from the Berdiansk port.[14]
