The 2022 Donetsk bombing was a missile attack in the center of Donetsk, Ukraine during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, which the Donetsk People's Republic authorities claimed was carried out by Ukrainian forces. The attack occurred at around 11:31 local time on 14 March 2022, targeting Universitetskaya Street and Artyoma Street in the centre of Donetsk. Preliminary information given by DPR officials stated that the attack left 20 civilians killed and 9 wounded.[2] Later the toll was updated to 23 killed and 28 wounded.[1]

History[edit]

Ukrainian authorities blamed Russia for the attack, indicating it was a false-flag staged to cover the deaths of civilians by Russian forces in Kharkiv, Irpin and Mykolayiv. They claimed that the blast appeared to have occurred from a stationary object, such as a car bomb, due to the blast pattern and lack of missile debris.[3] The DPR authorities said that the attack was made by Tochka-U tactical missile system used by Ukrainian forces, which was shot down by the DPR Armed Forces.[4]

CIT - Conflict Intelligence Team - a Russian OSINT investigation organisation claims that, due to the position of missile tail, the origin of the missile is in Russian-controlled territory.[5]
