On 16 March 2022, Kherson International Airport was the target of a Ukrainian airstrike as part of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Wall Street Journal reported that "Ukraine carried out an airstrike on the Kherson airport, which is now a Russian airbase, and satellite imagery of the tarmac showed seven destroyed or damaged Russian helicopters, some of them engulfed in flames."[1]

The Ukranians also claimed to have killed Lieutenant general Andrey Mordvichev in the bombings. He would be Russia's fifth general officer to be killed in the invasion and highest ranking so far. [2]

Background[edit]

During the Battle of Kherson, Russian forces captured Kherson International Airport and began using it as an airbase.[3][4][5]
