Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal (Saskatchewan)

Saskatchewan’s Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal celebrates the 70th anniversary of Her Majesty Accession to the Throne. The medal is a tangible way for our province to honour Her Majesty for her service to Canada. The medal program is the primary focus of the Government of Saskatchewan’s Jubilee year commemorations, awarding a total of 7,000 medals throughout the province during the Platinum Jubilee. Her Majesty approved the design of the medal in May 2022.

Lieutenant Governor Russ Mirasty presented Platinum Jubilee Medals to distinguished Saskatchewan citizens at "Celebrating 70 Recipients for Her Majesty’s 70th Anniversary" on August 30th at The Hotel Saskatchewan in Regina. It was the first of numerous medal presentations that His Honour will be presenting medals at throughout the Jubilee year which continues until February 5th, 2023.

The Government of Saskatchewan is partnering with several organizations to distribute the medals to recipients around the province. For more information about the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal, and how you can nominate a deserving member of your community, visit the provincial website

Platinum Jubilee Flag

On Sunday, February 6, 2022, the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Flag was raised at the Saskatchewan Legislative Building and Government House in Regina.

Platinum Jubilee Gardens

On February 7, 2022, Saskatchewan Lieutenant Governor Mirasty joined his Canadian Vice-Regal colleagues to announce the dedication of 13 Platinum Jubilee Gardens – one in each province and territory. Each of the gardens will include plants suited to the local climate. Vice-Regal Offices received tobacco seeds from plants grown for The Chapel Royal at Massey College, which is called Gi-Chi-Twaa Gimaa Kwe Mississauga Anishinaabek AName Amik (The Queen’s Anishinaabek Sacred Place). The inclusion of tobacco, where climates and protocols allow, represents the enduring relationship between the Crown and Indigenous Peoples. The Saskatchewan Platinum Jubilee Garden will be located at Government House in Regina.

“This garden will be a living tribute to Her Majesty. These gardens honour our Sovereign, and they also recognize the sacred relationship between the Crown and Indigenous Peoples through the treaties,” said Lieutenant Governor Russ Mirasty.

The Queen’s Portrait

Lt. Governor Russ Mirasty, Donna Mirasty, artist Phil Richards and Jennifer Richards unveil Diamond Jubilee portrait of Queen Elizabeth II during Platinum Jubilee celebrations in Saskatchewan Government House on May 19, 2022.

Government House is hosting The Queen’s portrait from May, 2022 until March, 2023. At 10 feet tall and weighing 145 kg (320 lbs), this impressive portrait of Her Majesty was created by Canadian artist Phil Richards to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012.  The painting was unveiled at Buckingham Palace on June 6, 2012. Its permanent home is at Rideau Hall in the ballroom. While the 1872 ballroom is undergoing rehabilitation, the portrait is touring Canada and we are delighted to host it at Government House in Regina.

Portrait in the Making

From April 9, 2022 to March 28, 2023, Government House is featuring an informative art exhibit featuring preparatory work by artist Phil Richards relating to his creation of The Queen’s portrait. Preparing for the final portrait included extensive research, 300+ sketches and drawings, photography, maquettes, sculptures, models and more! The whole process took about seven months over a two-year period.

Platinum on the Prairie: The Queen in Saskatchewan

Government House is also presenting a new interactive exhibit about The Queen’s connections to Saskatchewan. Her Majesty and her late husband, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, visited our province on six occasions. This exciting exhibit includes an electronic guest book in which guests can send personal messages of congratulations to The Queen.
